Fed Holds First-Ever Press Conference

Federal Reserve policymakers decided to leave short-term interest rates unchanged. A statement released after the meeting said the recovery is on "firmer footing" and noted a pick up in commodity prices. But Fed policymakers do not think the upward pressure on prices will result in a longer-term inflation problem. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke answers questions from reporters Wednesday afternoon in the Fed's first ever post-meeting press conference. Michele Norris talks with NPR's John Ydstie.

How Long Can Palin Put Off Iowa?

Robin Abcarian, Los Angeles Times
It's presidential campaign season in the heartland, and on any given day, some semi-famous Republican is here to ask Iowans for a shot at the Big Job. Former governors and other onetime pols trip over each other as they vie for love and money. As expected, there is even an evangelical Christian mother of five lighting up crowds of religious conservatives. But her name is not Sarah Palin. So where is the former Alaska governor?
