Fed Holds First-Ever Press Conference

Federal Reserve policymakers decided to leave short-term interest rates unchanged. A statement released after the meeting said the recovery is on "firmer footing" and noted a pick up in commodity prices. But Fed policymakers do not think the upward pressure on prices will result in a longer-term inflation problem. Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke answers questions from reporters Wednesday afternoon in the Fed's first ever post-meeting press conference. Michele Norris talks with NPR's John Ydstie.

As expected, there is even an evangelical Christian mother of five lighting up crowds of religious conservatives. But her name is not Sarah Palin. So where is the former Alaska governor?

Do The Threats In Syria Have Muscle?

European countries are trying to exert pressure on the regime in Syria as the Syrian government escalates its bloody crackdown on protesters. More than 400 people have been killed since protests began nearly six weeks ago. European Union countries summoned Syrian ambassadors Wednesday and warned they could impose sanctions and freeze assets if the killing continues. For more on the situation in Syria, Melissa Block speaks with Ted Kattouf. Angle Denies She'd Run as an Independent (Taegan Goddard's Political Wire)

Sharron Angle (R) denied a report that she'd run as an independent if
Republicans were to pass her over for replacing the possibly departing Rep.
Dean Heller (R-NV).

Said Angle: "I am committed to the House race for the Second Congressional
District as a Republican candidate. Regardless of a possible special
election's impact in the short term, I have hired an experienced consulting
firm, Revolvis, that has a proven track record of winning complex campaigns. I
am confident in my team's ability to muster all necessary resources for
success."

Dave Catanese: "For a candidate to make the uncommon move of citing a specific
consulting firm in a statement demonstrates how Angle is trying to rebuild her
reputation after her disastrous 2010 effort, which many blame on mismanagement
by her previous political operatives."

Government Creates Poverty

John Stossel, FOX Business
The U.S. government has "helped" no group more than it has "helped" the American Indians. It stuns me when President Obama appears before Indian groups and says things like, "Few have been ignored by Washington for as long as Native Americans." Ignored? Are you kidding me? They should be so lucky. The government has made most Indian tribes wards of the state. Government manages their land, provides their health care, and pays for housing and child care. Twenty different departments and agencies have special "native American" programs. The result?...

The Boeing Co., an innovator in the rebuilding of a recession-ravaged America, found a way to proceed efficiently on a project that would help South Carolina with 1,000 employees already hired, but no.The National Labor Relations Board has decided that fair play and an improved economy must not get in the way of union wishes. The independent agency, nowadays in the grip of pro-labor Democrats, has filed a complaint to make Boeing desert South Carolina and build the planned 787 Dreamliner passenger planes in the state of Washington.

Here’s some news you may not have heard: One year after the worst oil spill in history, the Gulf of Mexico is nearly back to normal. That’s right: Armageddon didn’t happen.
